Migration Story

Even if you know enough about the migration story from the parents, invite the child to tell you his/her own story.

It may be quite different from what the parents say, as the child obviously has her/his unique perspective, and this will allow you to better understand the needs and difficulties the child may have.

Some children pay most attention to some aspects of their situation which may be surprising for adults, e.g. a refugee child may declare that they would prefer to go back to their country of origin and live together with their extended family again, even if it would be dangerous.

It is important to keep accepting and non-judgmental attitude and remember that the more complex and challenging the general situation of the family is, the more difficult it is for the child to grasp it.
