Parents’ Perspective

As already mentioned, the information you may get from the parents are very valuable and essential especially in case of younger children, who obviously will not have much knowledge about the whole complexity of their life situation, migration context, family context, etc.

However, you need to pay careful attention to any discrepancies between what you learn from the parents, the child and your own observation and critically analyse to what extent the parties (parents and student) are influenced by their cultural context and possibly different needs and expectations.

Whenever you are in doubt, it is always a good idea to talk about the specific case with you colleagues or look for additional support, e.g. from a practitioner experienced in working with multicultural communities.
