Parents/family and migration context
One of the most important starting points is to learn more about the family and the context of their migration. What are the reasons for moving to another country? What is the education system that the child originates from? What do we know about the child from the parental perspective? What do we know about her/his culture of origin?
We have divided the parental and contextual level into three separate flow-charts:
1. The context of migration: following this chart, you will get a better understanding of the broader context of the family moving to a new country.
2. The school system (former and present): by following this chart you will see the importance of understanding the school system that the child originates from and their situation in our country / in the host country.
3. Meet the child: following this chart you will focus on the child from their own perspective, perspective of parents and their cultural background.
Learn about the child and family
- How the context of migration may influence the adaptation to a new school environment?
- Identify strengths and weaknesses of the child –> prepare the map of possible difficulties but also personal resources you can build on.
Build a safe relationship with family
- Make sure that when interacting with child and family you create an open and trusting atmosphere
Secure basic needs
Remember that there may be several needs to be met, some of which can be categorised as:
- Psychological needs.
- Social needs.
- Health-related/medical (especially in case of refugees, PTSD risk, etc.).
Provide important information
Remember that while some things may be obvious to you, they may be not so obvious to child and family. Thus, an important part of the sense of security is to provide information to child and family regarding, among others:
- The school system and its organization.
- Social system and possible sources of support
- Culture and widely understood closest social and physical environment.
Ask About the Context of Migration
Are all family members in Poland? If not, are they coming? What is their situation?
